DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) -- Honoring the late leader of the civil rights movement.
Saturday, dozens took part in a march to pay tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Before the march, there was a short program starting at the Decatur Civic Center.
Then the group marched to the Cultural Arts Center where several pieces of art work were on display including from Decatur Public School students.Â
Organizers said, the event is a way to bring the community together to teacher the importance of honor the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
"we are happy to have the response that we have gotten so far. we are working to do better. getting the word out better and communicating better. because you know that is important. one thing that we have understood is that communication is important." said, Bishop James Wills.
"it is very important because of all of things that the legacy that MLK left behind and everything that we had to commemorate to make sure that we pass that information down and that it doesn't get old and that it doesn't go away." said, Melverta Wilkins, President of the Metro of Decatur Black Chamber of Commerce.
The MLK Jr. Day Banquet will be hosted at the Mt. Zion Convention Center. The event starts at 5:30 p.m. Sunday.
