DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) — The man accused of shooting two Millikin University students in a road rage incident appeared in court for the first time.
Dontarious L. Murphy, 28, appeared in a Macon County Courtroom Monday afternoon. Murphy is charged with attempted murder, aggravated battery with a firearm, and aggravated discharge of a firearm.
Murphy was arrested on Nov. 9 by Decatur Police detectives and the U.S. Marshals Task Force in relation to the Oct. 15 shooting.

He is suspected of shooting two Millikin students after yelling at them for cutting him off in traffic. Both students sustained non-life-threatening gunshot wounds and were treated at Decatur Memorial Hospital and later released.
The Macon County State's Attorney's Office petitioned for the judge to deny pre-trial release. It argued Murphy has three cases currently pending, which include, a burglary case, armed violence, and aggravated battery.
Murphy told the judge he would like to hire his own counsel. His next hearing is at the end of the month.
