Man sentenced to 55 years for murder, attempted murder

DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) - A Decatur man convicted of the murder of one man, and the attempted murder of another, has been sentenced to 55 years in prison.

According to court records, Elliott Murphy, 24, was sentenced to 40 years in prison for the murder conviction, and 15 years in prison for the attempted murder conviction.  Records show that the sentences must be served consecutively, and that Murphy will be placed on three years of mandatory supervised release upon completing the sentences.

Murphy was originally charged and convicted in the 2009 death of Jerry Newingham.  However, in 2013 the Fourth District Appellate Court found that Murphy's public defender had been working under a conflict of interest, and the conviction was thrown out.  A new trial was ordered, during which Murphy was convicted of first-degree murder and attempted murder.

Murphy will receive seven years, nine months of credit for time previously served.
