MAROA, Ill. (WAND) - Students at Maroa-Forsyth Middle School are creating care packages for local cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy.
"My students at the beginning of the year made a list of things that were important to them and important to our community," said Sara Nave, the teacher of the school's 'Focus the Learning' classes. "One of the things that was on there was giving back to people who go through some things, including cancer."
In Nave's class, student can act on issues they see in their community. Together, they put together an action plan to help those fighting cancer.
"Our students took this as a great opportunity to capitalize on some of those pink games that were going on and create a bake sale where they raised almost $600," Nave said.
With that money, supplies were purchased to send off to patients.
"Through talking to cancer patients, water and snacks was one of the things that was really important to them, but also having things to combat nausea like gum and mints." Nave said, "Chemotherapy can be a 2 to 4 hour process, so we also put in activity books."
Nave says there is enough money to send 50 care packages. They will be sent to patients at the Cancer Care Center of Decatur.
