(WAND) - Bringing home the bacon! May 6 will now be known as Illinois Bacon Day.

The Illinois Pork Producers Association will be at the Illinois State Capitol Wednesday to celebrate the commemoration of Senate Resolution 749 and House Resolution 823 designating May 6 as Illinois Bacon Day.

Illinois pig farmers, IPPA staff, and FFA state officers will be handing out candy bacon treats to legislators at the Illinois State Capitol and talking about the role pork production plays in the state.

Illinois pig farmers produce over 6 billion slices of bacon every year. Illinois pork production is ranked 4th in the country and supports over 30,000 jobs, contributing an estimated $13.8 billion to the economy.

To support Illinois farmers, people are encouraged to #BringHomeTheBacon by keeping demand for pork products high by purchasing pork.

Many local restaurants will be participating in Illinois Bacon Day by featuring a pork special on their menu on May 6.
