SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) — One woman is dead after a shooting on New Year's Day.
The Springfield Deputy Chief Sara Pickford said on New Year's Day, around 11:40 in the morning, police found a woman who had been shot near the intersection of S. 17th and E. Cedar Streets.
Police said the woman was transported to a local hospital for treatment, but she did not survive.
Jim Allmon, the Sangamon County Coroner identified the woman as a 31-year-old from Springfield. She was pronounced dead at 12:11 p.m.
The coroner said the identity of the woman will be released after the family is notified. An autopsy will take place on Thursday.
This is a developing investigation, and police said more information will be provided once it becomes available.
