URBANA, Ill. (WAND) – Dodging outdoor elements inside of the Champaign County Sheriff's Office are about to come to an end. The office will soon move one building over to a newly renovated facility across from the Champaign County Courthouse.
Sheriff Dustin Heuerman tells WAND News when it rains water frequently comes in through a leaky roof in the current building. The structure was opened at 204 E. Main Street in Urbana in 1980.
“It would cost more to repair this building than to move into a new building,” Heuerman told WAND News. “I mean it’s not unusual for the rain to be coming through the roof on days when it really rains. Next week, after that big snow, when it starts melting eventually it will not be unusual to see puddles coming in from the roof.”
Evidence and patrol personnel are expected to move at the end of the month with the remainder of the staff moving in March.
