SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) — The creators of a popular local sandwich have now been honored in bronze.

A commemorative plaque was unveiled at the Leland building at the corner of 6th St. and Capitol Ave. to honor Joe Schweska and Steve Tomko, the creators of the distinctive Horseshoe.

The open-faced sandwich was named after the horseshoe shaped slices of ham. French fries were used to represent nails, and the sizzle platter is meant to be the hot anvil.

Earlier this year, Visit Springfield launched the Springfield Horseshoe Sandwich Trail. Twenty-four local businesses were included at launch.
