RANTOUL, Ill. (WAND) — Following a 16-year-old hurt in a hit-and-run in November, the Rantoul Police Department said they were able to find the driver with the use of license plate readers and video surveillance on December 18.

On November 7, police went to the area of Champaign Avenue, also known as US Rt. 136 and Chanute St. for a car hitting a pedestrian.

Once police arrived they said they found out the 16-year-old teen boy was crossing the street in a crosswalk when he was hit. The car then continued westbound on Champaign Ave. following the accident, but it did not stop. The teen was taken to a local hospital but with non-life-threatening injuries.

Following the accident, police said they continued investigating and found the suspect's vehicle hidden in a garage near Marica Dr. in Rantoul. Police then took the vehicle in for evidence after it was acknowledged that it was damaged in a manner consistent with the hit-and-run.

Following that, police said they were able to identify the driver as 41-year-old Jamie Diego-Martin. However, they have not been able to locate him and place him under arrest.

After police asked the public for help finding Diego-Martin, they arrested him in Knoxville, TN, with the assistance of the US Marshal's Fugitive Task Force. He will remain behind bars there until he is extradited back to Champaign.
