Man hit by ambulance in Springfield bike

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) — A bicyclist was hit and injured after police said a man stole an ambulance from a hospital in Springfield.

Springfield police told WAND News they were called to 11th and Carpenter around noon Tuesday for a report of a bicyclist being hit by someone in a stolen ambulance.

Officers said the bicyclist was taken to the hospital but refused treatment.

Police said they learned the ambulance was stolen from the ambulance bay at HSHS St. John's Hospital.

They said the suspect actually returned to the hospital ambulance bay in the stolen ambulance after hitting the cyclist and was arrested there. 

Springfield police arrested a 38-year-old man on Tuesday. He was preliminarily charged with motor vehicle theft and aggravated battery.
