RANTOUL, Ill. (WAND) — Prairie Pines Campgrounds was purchased by the owner of Crispin Auto Sales, Julio Crispin last year. Since then, they've undergone renovations and have begun taking reservations for the camping season.
"This is essentially the completion of phase 1 so now, we have completely rehabbed the club house. We have new bathrooms, we have all new infrastructure for the campers," said Crispin.
Crispin says his goal is for people to enjoy the activities they can do in their own backyard instead of traveling elsewhere.
"What can Rantoul offer people to come? And for us it's 'hey we have a really neat sports complex that attracts a lot of families to play here.' We want to accommodate that market because a lot of those people are traveling 3, 4, 5 hours away with kids and they prefer to stay where they don't have to stay in a tiny motel. They can bring their camper they can grill outside," stated Crispin.
Reservations have started coming in and for seasonal travelers, they're almost booked.
"We have 93 sites here which we dedicate about 50% for season camping. Those spots are almost completely full, that's 45 spots that are dedicated to that, we are at 44," said Crispin.
Crispin is urging people to reserve their spots now before they're all sold out.
