SHELBYVILLE, Ill. (WAND) — The city of Shelbyville is creating a new Dive Team. Shelbyville Commissioners voted to approve a resolution that would create a team, under the Water Rescue Act.
Shelbyville Mayor Jeff Johnson told WAND News the city could provide dive team services for the entire county, if they are able to create an Intergovernmental Agreement (IGA) with the Shelby County Board. The county created a dive team as an official county agency, but the entire board resigned minutes later. Since then, law enforcement agencies and neighboring counties have been providing dive team services to Shelby County.
Shelby County Dive Team
The city has now sent this letter to the county board with a tentative proposal for an IGA. Shelbyville would operate and insure a Dive Team, which could provide services for the entire county. In return, the county would agree to provide its dive teen equipment and offer some funding for the program.Â
Mayor Johnson said this would save the county money, compared to the cost it incurred when its dive team was operational. He said the county has not yet responded.
