SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND)- A Springfield bridge will soon be named the "Massey Memorial Bridge" after the late Sonya Massey.

The 36 -year-old was shot and killed by a Sangamon County Deputy after she called 9-1-1 worried about a prowler.

Since then, the deputy has been fired and charged with murder.

During Tuesday night"s Springfield City Council meeting the council approved a measure to commission a mural for the Jefferson Bridge, and work with IDOT to rename the bridge in her honor.

Springfield Alderwoman Erin Conley spoke at the meeting and stated, "Sonya Massey's mom is in the audience tonight and I just want to say this is a very small gesture in terms of everything, but we're honored to have her name as part of our city. We will keep her in our hearts and in our thoughts."

The proposal still needs a final council approval next week.
