SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) — The former Sangamon County Sheriff's deputy charged with the murder of Sonya Massey will remain in jail.

Sean Grayson's legal team filed a motion to release him from custody. Today in court, his attorneys argued that he would not be able to get proper care for his colon cancer in jail.

Judge Ryan Cadagin weighed Grayson's medical concerns, but chose to deny the motion based on the nature of the crime and the fact that he offered Massey no immediate medical care after shooting her on July 6.

The same afternoon Grayson was in court, Sangamon County Sheriff Jack Campbell announced his retirement. Politicians as well as community leaders have been calling on Campbell to resign based on his department's hiring of Grayson in the first place.

In Friday's retirement statement, the sheriff said the "current political climate has made it nearly impossible" for him to continue effectively in his role and that some individuals would rather see the community divided and in turmoil.
