CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WAND): A Champaign-Urbana group says the sky is the limit.
The Champaign-Urbana Astronomical Society is raising money for a new observatory.Â
The group says they have about 1,000 visitors annually. Their current observatory dome can only allow five to six people in at once.
So far the group has raised about $25,000 dollars and laid the foundation for the new building. They hope to raise another $25,000 to finish the shed like structure.
"The roof will actually roll off, there will be a motor so think about a regular shed but the roof rolls back," David Leake, C-U Astronomical Society President, says. "That will have telescopes inside of the room where they can look at the sky. A lot more people will be able to look at the sky as well instead of just looking through a little thin slit of a dome."
The current observation dome is not ADA accessible, whereas the new one will be.
