SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) — A new proposal by Illinois House Democrats would ban health insurance companies from using only AI to deny coverage.
Insurance companies would still be allowed to use AI, they just can't be made the sole decision makers when approving or denying healthcare coverage.
State Rep. Bob Morgan (D-Highland Park) said Illinois lawmakers need to act on health insurance AI, as it is already being used to deny coverage.
"Insurance payers are using AI to decide what to do with your health insurance claim and we are completely blind to what it is doing," Morgan said.
The bill would also force health insurance companies in a yearly report to notify their consumers how and when AI was used in their medical coverage.
It passed out of the House insurance committee 11-6 on partisan lines. It now heads to the House floor where lawmakers could talk about it in the coming weeks.
