SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) — A bill to ban the use of forever chemicals in common household items has arrived on Gov. JB Pritzker's desk.

This plan could ban PFAS from being added to cosmetics, dental floss, children's items and toys, menstrual products and underwear, among other items.

Sponsors focused on products where PFAS exposure is likely to be frequent or prolonged, especially for vulnerable people like children.

"People shouldn't have to worry about being repeatedly exposed to toxic chemicals from products they use every day," said Sen. Julie Morrison (D-Lake Forest). "This legislation is the product of extensive negotiations with state agencies and stakeholders to take a proactive response to a growing crisis."

Lawmakers set a 2032 implementation date to give manufacturers time to phase out the use of forever chemicals.

House Bill 2516 passed out of the Senate on a 45-9 vote. It received a 77-39 vote in the House.

"We can't ignore the science linking PFAS to cancer and other serious health problems," Morrison said. "Illinois is poised to lead the way in phasing out dangerous substances that don't belong in our homes or bodies."
