SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) — Forever chemicals, also known as PFAS, are carcinogenic chemicals found in everyday items. A plan to ban the chemicals from beauty products passed the House Tuesday.

The beauty products that forever chemicals would be banned from include makeup, hair products, nail products, soaps and lotions, tanning products, perfumes and cologne.

State Rep. Sonya Harper (D-Chicago) said Illinois should protect its citizens from these harmful forever chemicals.

"We just want to make sure our beauty products are safe here in Illinois because some of these contain dangerous chemicals and toxic metals cause severe health issues including neurological damage, skin rashes, kidney damage and irreparable reproductive harm," Harper said.

GOP lawmakers voted against the bill, who said the bill needs more thought and more time before it becomes a law.

The plan passed the House on a partisan 69-38 vote. It will now head to the Senate for further debate.
