SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) — P-FAS, also known as forever chemicals, are carcinogenic chemicals found in everyday household items. An Illinois Democrat lawmaker is looking to outright ban them.

A plan championed by State Rep. Sonya Harper (D-Chicago) would ban all forever chemicals from beauty products. This includes makeup, hair products, nail products, soaps and lotions, tanning products, perfumes and cologne.

"We simply just want to make sure that we have toxic free cosmetics here in the state of Illinois," Harper said.

GOP members of the committee voted against the bill, who said if a company chose to break the proposed law, there were no penalties written in the plan.

The proposal passed out of the House public health committee on a partisan 6-3 vote. It now heads to the House floor where lawmakers could talk about it in the near future.
