SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) — Legislation on Gov. JB Pritzker's desk could require all assisted living and shared homes to have an AED on site.
The bill also calls for all healthcare employees at the facilities to be trained on how to use defibrillators during emergencies.Â
54% of the state's nursing homes already have AEDs, but sponsors argue every facility should have the equipment.Â
The effective date would be January 1, 2030 to allow nursing homes sufficient time to buy AEDs.
"The average cost is $1,500 to $3,000 depending on the model chosen," said Rep. Natalie Manley (D-Joliet). "Some cost more. Almost 40% of the homes have found ways to pay for AEDS."
The proposal passed unanimously out of the House and Senate this spring. Sen. Doris Turner (D-Springfield) was the lead sponsor in her chamber.
"When you have that type of facility and you have individuals that are placed in your care, you really should be able to ensure their health and wellbeing is foremost in everybody's mind," Turner said.Â
