SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) — A commission could be created by the Illinois House Democrats that would look to see if the auto insurance companies have discriminated customers based on credit score, zip code, race and age.

The commission would take one year to write up a report and release that report out to the public. From there lawmakers can use the data to plan future bills.

This commission will be run through the Secretary of State office rather than the Department of Insurance. Because of this the Department of Insurance is opposed to the plan.

Amy Williams from the Secretary of State's office said they want this report for the data it brings.

"When we ran the bill last year to eliminate credit score the opposition from the industry said we don't have any Illinois specific data," Williams said. "This is us getting that data. This is us heeding that call, getting the information and be able to have a substantive conversation this time next year."

State Rep Jeff Keicher (R-Sycamore) is opposed to the bill, who said that this should be up for the insurance industry to decide, and the plan is a "slippery slope."

The plan passed out of the House insurance committee on a partisan 11-6. It now heads to the House floor where lawmakers could talk about it in the near future.
