SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) — People with celiac disease could have less to worry about, as a new plan in the Illinois Senate would teach hospitality workers about the disease and how to prevent cross contamination.

In the bill, anyone who handles food would be taught about the disease, how to handle gluten-free products, prevent cross contamination, properly clean to remove gluten residues and understand the labeling and identification of gluten free products.
State Sen. Sally Turner (R-Lincoln) said that there needs to be more action done by restaurants and state lawmakers to help those living with the disease.
"It's interesting when you go to a restaurant and some don't have a menu for celiac disease," Turner said. "Sometimes the servers don't even know what it is, so I think this awareness is a really good thing so we can fully understand it ourselves and also people working in the industries."
The plan passed unanimously out of the Consumer Protection Committee Thursday morning. It is now in the Senate where lawmakers could talk about it on first hearing.
