SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) — Illinois House Democrats passed a plan Wednesday to expand youth civic engagement in honor of Rev. Jesse Jackson.
The proposal could ensure all high schools offer students of voting age the opportunity to register during the school day in a safe, accessible and nonpartisan environment.
Sponsors said civic engagement should be part of the transition to adulthood, and this plan could help even more young people prepare to vote.
"It sends a message to every graduating senior in Illinois that you're not just prepared to leave school, you're prepared to participate, lead and help shape the future of this state," said Rep. Kimberly Du Buclet (D-Chicago).
Local Republicans said parents should be with students when they register to vote.
"Although these students may be 17 or even 18 and may be considered an adult, they may have that opportunity without conversation with their parent," said Rep. Regan Deering (R-Decatur).
House Bill 4339 passed out of the House on a 77-24 vote. The measure now heads to the Senate for further consideration.
