SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) — A bill that would look to reduce discrimination in the life insurance industry passed the Illinois Senate Thursday.

The plan would ban life insurance companies from limiting or denying coverage based on a criminal record.
State Sen. Adriane Johnson (D-Waukegan) said families shouldn't be put in debt because of a crime their loved one committed a lifetime ago.
"I would argue and suggest that we remove the invisible handcuffs and the invisible prison cells and allow people who are productive citizens to be able to have coverage to provide for their families," Johnson said.
This proposal passed out of the Illinois Senate on a partisan 36-18-1 vote. It will now head to the Governor's office where it could be signed into law.
