SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) - Springfield police arrested eight people and seized nine guns over a 7-hour shift this past weekend. 

The Springfield Police Department deploys additional officers over the weekends to combat violence and weapon offenses.

During the July 25 shift, into the early morning hours of July 26, several proactive stops were made investigating gun crimes. 

8 firearm-related arrests in a 7-hour shift were made, and nine guns were taken off the streets. 

Everyone arrested lives outside of the City of Springfield. Those arrested were from Peoria, Decatur, Jacksonville, Florence and Lansing, IL. 

Some of the charges related to these arrests include unlawful use of a weapon, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, armed violence, armed habitual criminal and unlawful possession of a weapon by a convicted felon.
