DANVILLE, Ill. (WAND) — Step Recovery Center in Danville works with veterans, people facing addiction, and more. They originally began their Sleepout For The Homeless event to raise awareness for veteran homelessness, but it grew to become something much bigger.
"This event may have started out as helping the veterans, but then it moved into just people in general who are homeless. It's terrible," said CEO Wendy Lambert.
People don't use anything but blankets and a cardboard box to shield themselves from the cold air, only a glimpse of what homeless people face every day.
"We hate that people that serve our country don't have a very good awareness program for their homeless people and we want to open that door up and make things better for them," said President, Audey Lake.
