DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) — As property tax bills hit mailboxes, you’re likely to see an increase in your assessments. They're another side effect of the pandemic when home values jumped.
It’s too late to have your bill adjusted now. However, there are steps you can take in the coming weeks to possibly lower next year's bill.
Make sure you have all possible exemptions like the homestead exemption. Senior citizens, aged 65 and older, can get a senior citizen deduction. Check with the county supervisor of assessments for other possible deductions like military and disability exemptions.

“If they don’t have their homestead exemption, that’s a $6,000 value off of their assessed value,” stated Decatur Township Assessor Vicki Sheets. “So, that helps a lot. That’s roughly $600 in a tax bill.”
If you believe the assessment of your home is wrong you can file an appeal with the county board or review. If your home has condition issues, you can contact your township assessor to see if the structure is eligible for a lower assessment. All of these could possibly lower your tax bill for next year.
