DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) — The Super Bowl might be weeks away, but that doesn't stop hardcore football fans from getting ready for the big day.
And the most important thing to have ready is the food.
The cost of your typical Super Bowl meal is projected to be around the same as last year, according to Chris Marquette, the Grover Hermann Professor of Business in the Tabor School of Business at Millikin University.
"We have seen food price inflation over the year, but it's mostly due to very large increases in a few commodities," said Marquette.
The cost of chicken wings have increased.
"But frozen pizzas and tortilla chips, are actually lower than they were than last year," explained Marquette.
Most of the inflation is due to an increase in the cost of labor.
"Coming out of the pandemic, when we had a great demand for labor to the labor shortage is decreasing in magnitude ... and that now, inflation and labor costs have somewhat settled down, in a year over year basis," said Marquette.
But even for a larger group, the price tag is manageable, if it's divided equally.
"Wells Fargo estimates that for a 10 person party, you know, food and drinks are $140 dollars."
For people that don't drink beer or wine, this celebration could be cheaper.
But, there is another way you can save.
"The big way that you can save is to not get the prepackaged goods like prepackaged guacamole — to get avocados instead and make the guacamole … And so if you prepare the stuff yourself, you can save money."
