ACHILLE, Okla. (WAND) – Someone threatened a transgender student in Oklahoma, forcing a school to close down.
Achille Public Schools closed on Monday and Tuesday after someone made a threatening comment toward a 12-year-old transgender girl on social media. KFOR-TV reports the comment in questions suggested someone should “make him a female”, adding that “a good sharp knife will do the job real quick”.
Citing concerns about adults demonstrating at the school in a community where permits aren’t required to do so, the district decided to close for several days. Superintendent Rick Beene said it would be unclear when a demonstrating group might come to the building, making the situation hard to prepare for.
The comment came from an adult on the “Achille ISD Parent Group” Facebook page. Another person asked why parents are “letting their kids be transgender”.
Oklahoma City group “Free Mom Hugs” responded to the situation, with founder Sara Cunningham telling KFOR her “heart just sank” when she heard about the situation. She said the ordeal exposed “the power of fear and ignorance”. She offered resources for the district to use, such as LGBTQ sensitivity training – something Beene says could be a possibility.
The district opened again for classes on Wednesday.
