CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WAND) — Rising complaints in Facebook parent groups say that multiple students have remained unregistered for the school year, already two weeks in at Champaign Unit 4 School District.Â
Registration for new students — called the Student Assignment Process — ran from February 26th to May 1st. There were only in-person opportunities to register advertised in the Registration Guide. The Student Assignment Process was revised in 2023 to give parents and guardians the opportunity to apply to multiple different schools.
Unit 4 released a statement regarding unregistered students:
"We are so pleased that families continue to choose Unit 4 Schools. We are working continuously to get students registered. The registration process involves several factors, including adjusting the number of students in our classrooms, accessing previous school records, assigning homeroom and class schedules, preparing classroom materials, ensuring student Chromebook access, delivering furniture, and updating bus routes to ensure exceptional learning experiences for students.
"The District hosted multiple registration events leading up to and into the new school year. We have registered hundreds of students in this late cycle. Student assignment specialists are working overtime and we have hired additional temporary staff to assist us with the late registration process. To minimize inconvenience to our families registering late, we ask that they visit our website prior to their appointment to see what documents are required for registration. If they don’t bring proper documentation, it can delay the process.
"We appreciate our families’ patience and understanding as we work as quickly as possible to get students registered and in the classroom. While it may take a bit longer than we’d like, we want to ensure a quality transition for everyone."
Stacey Moore, the Chief Communications Officer for Unit 4, said that they are placing students every day and that the district has registered more than 300 new students since August 1st. She encourages parents to review the districts registration guidelines to register their students.
WAND did not receive answers for how many students still need to be placed or when a solution will be reached.
