DECATUR – WAND’s Matt Loveless was at the Decatur Police Department, where a second conference was held revealing more detailed surrounding an officer-involved shooting.
Decatur Police say the man shot was 40-year-old Lonnie D. Mitchell II, of Decatur. He was shot in the chest after an “engagement” with Mitchell shortly after 1 AM on Monday morning.
The officers involved were identified as Andrew Whittmer and Jason Danner. Whittmer shot Mitchell and has been with the Decatur Police since January 2011. Danner was also on scene responding to reports of a man with a handgun on East Main Street.
The conference also revealed Mitchell was carrying a BB gun, not a handgun as previously believed.
