1600 block of E Prairie Fire

DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) - A woman was able to escape after her home caught fire early Thursday morning in Decatur.

The Decatur Fire Department was called to the 1600 block of E. Prairie at 3:20 a.m. 

Firefighters found a one-story home engulfed in thick black smoke. The crew quickly deployed a handline to extinguish the flames.

A woman was home at the time of the fire. She was asleep when the fire started but was awoken when her smoke alarms went off. She was able to safely get out of the house. She was displaced by the fire. 

The American Red Cross has been contacted to provide assistance.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by the Decatur Fire Department.
