MONTICELLO, Ill. (WAND) — The Monticello Sages are preparing for their Week 1 matchup against Valley Central.
The Sages' 2025 season ended in a one-point loss to Tolono Unity.
"It just puts that bad blood in our hearts, and we really want to show everyone that we can go further than that and make a big statement," said senior tackle Jake Motsegood.
Head coach Cullen Welter said the team's playoff experience serves as a foundation heading into the new season.
"Having the experience of a playoff run, we don't necessarily look at that at the beginning of the year, but we know that that's important in regards to a foundation and as far as work ethic, as far as expectations heading into the season," Welter said.
The Sages have been consistently competitive under Welter, including a state championship game appearance two years ago.
Welter said senior leadership has been a strength of this group since winter workouts.
"It's really important to have kids with experience, particularly this group has been really strong in regards to their leadership and to have them sort of take control of things has been really nice for the team," he said.
Senior running back Forrest Rawdin said the experienced players have a responsibility to set expectations for younger teammates.
"We know what we have to do to get to that point and go beyond that, so it definitely carries over, but it's also new for these younger guys and we have to show them what to expect," Rawdin said.
So far, Welter likes what he's seen from his team.
"This is a fun group. They're a little goofy, but they're serious when they need to be. Like I said, I've been really pleased, starting all the way back in the winter, with the leadership they've shown," he said.
Motsegood said the team will be strictly business when the lights come on.
"We're not going to go around talking that much trash because that's not who we are. We're going to play our game and get the job done," he said.
Rawdin has been chomping at the bit for the whistle to blow on Friday nights.
"Exciting knowing in a few weeks, I'm going to be hitting someone," he said.
Monticello opens the season at home vs. Valley Central on Friday, Aug. 21.
