DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) - The Millikin softball team (20-11, 6-2) gained significant ground in the CCIW standings by earning 2 victories over Carthage (18-14, 7-5) on Sunday afternoon.
Big Blue were able to come from behind in game one to top the Firebirds, 5-4. In game two, Millikin controlled the game offensively from the start, helping them to a 4-1 win.
Millikin trailed 4-0 in the third inning, but gradually chipped their way back into the game. A two-run home run by Ann Marie Meek cut the deficit in half.
Abbey Matthews was able to help the Big Blue effort with an RBI double in the fourth, followed by another RBI hit in the sixth to tie the game.
In the final inning, Summer Wynn delivered a hard hit grounder to third base, allowing the game-winning run to come across and give Millikin the win.
As teams took the field for the second game, Big Blue were able to get on the board off an RBI double from Meek to the right center gap.
Carthage would tie the game at 1-1, in the top half of the third before Millikin would go on to score a run in each of the next three innings. Big Blue clinched the sweep with a 4-1 victory.
The Big Blue will be back in action on the road at North Central College in Naperville, Ill. on Saturday, April 25 with first pitch set for 1:00 PM.
