DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) - Over the past week, central Illinois has not seen a change in the drought monitor. There has been some improvement over the past 90 days in the severe drought area. In contrast, the extreme drought area has increased a bit during that same time frame.
Rewind to a year ago (check out the second graphic), and only northern tier counties are abnormally dry. That's astounding! It goes to show what a rough year it was in the precipitation department.
Going forward, the average precipitation for February is near two inches, and March is close to 2.6". While the forecast looks promising to receive this much wet weather and a bit more, it will not be enough to take us out of the drought.
