DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) — Decatur police helped nearly 100 kids get some early Christmas cheer through 'Shop with Cop' Saturday.

The annual event is a partnership between the Decatur Police Department and the Decatur School District to help children in the community have a special Christmas.

Detective Tamara Tucker with DPD said the event helps create a connection with the local children.

"I love the interaction with the kids and their parents because it lets them see that we care about them and that we're human just as well as they are," said Tucker.

President of PDPA Unit #39 Jason Danner said the event brings a smile to officers' faces when kids get to pick out a toy.

"It's gratifying both for the kids and us to to be able to put a smile on these kids faces and make sure that they have a good Christmas," said Danner.

The program operates off of donations from the community and sponsors.
