DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) — Decatur residents are trying to make their streets a little safer in the wake of a fatal crash.

On Thursday morning, 6-year-old Noah Edwards was hit by a car on his way to school. The death has put a focus on school bus and school commute safety for many residents.

On Change.org, Sarah VanKirkley started a petition asking the city of Decatur and Decatur Public Schools to take three steps to make commuting safer for Decatur students.

The petition first recommends the city and district gather more data on bus stops and traffic patterns. Using this data, the petition asks decision makers to add signs to increase driver awareness of nearby bus stops.

Also, the petition pushes for a series of public service announcements informing Decatur drivers of the travel times for students and busses.

The petition can be found here.
