DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) — A prominent Decatur leader and trailblazer was honored in a way that permanently cements his legacy into the city he has served for more than four decades.

On Tuesday, city officials, community members, and family gathered for a ceremonial honorary street naming in recognition of Dr. Thomas E. Walker. The ceremony also happened to be on his birthday.

The street dedication marked a meaningful tribute to a man whose influence has spanned generations. According to Corey Walker, Walker's son, his father is the longest-serving and living African American business owner in the history of Decatur. He has operated a local business for over 45 years.

Corey Walker told the crowd on Tuesday that his father's leadership, faith and commitment have left a lasting mark on the city.

"He could have been any place in America, but he stayed committed to Decatur, Illinois."

Walker has also supported the youth of Decatur. He has helped create opportunities for them, which have been carried out through generations.

"My endeavor has always been to help somebody, because you never know who needs a hand up," Walker said during his ceremony.

Members of the Decatur City Council, Rep. Regan Deering, local pastors, and other members of the community cheered as one of Walker's grandsons pulled the cover off the sign that stands at the corner of Cerro Gordo and Water Streets.
