DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) - The Downtown Decatur Christmas Walk is a beloved holiday tradition in the community and marks the unofficial start to Christmas festivities.

Hundreds of people attended the event to finish up their Christmas shopping. Many visited local small businesses and the Decatur Area Arts Council, which featured products made by several local artists.

"We love this event and have been a part of it for many years, and we feel that it's a great way to connect us with the community and to get our artists, friends and partners connected with the community that they're creating and that people might not know that they're a part of," said Katie Dunscombe, program coordinator for the Decatur Area Arts Council.

Lots of kids got the chance to meet Santa at the Transfer House. He and Mrs. Claus collected lists from many kids ahead of Christmas.

The Christmas Walk is one of many events slated to happen this year. The Decatur Area Convention and Visitors Bureau has a list of additional events on its Facebook page.

"There's tons of stuff going on," said Jessica Milligan, director of meeting, sports and events at the Decatur Area Conventions and Visitors Bureau. "The Christmas parade is on Saturday. Forsyth's Village Market starts Friday. And Saturday, they have the Polar Express movie showing at the Civic Center. We have just tons of stuff going on."
