DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) — Maple syrup season has hit central Illinois, and a local conservation district is offering live demonstrations to learn more about the sweet, sticky stuff.

Maple syrup, tree tapping

On Saturday, the Rock Springs Nature Center is hosting its annual Maple Syrup Programs. Visitors can learn how sap becomes syrup, why spring is the best time of year to harvest sap, and how people used sap throughout history. Registrants will also get a chance to sample real maple syrup.

There will be three different programs, each lasting for one hour, at 11 a.m., noon, and 1 p.m., and the cost for the program is $3 per person.

Those who plan on attending should register by noon this Friday.
