SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) - The EF-1 tornado that hit Springfield on Wednesday caused serious property damage to the Animal Protection League shelter.Â
Building damage included pieces of the roof and side of the building falling off, and tree parts around the shelter.
Â
Though no animals were harmed in the tornado, the storm caused enough damage that animals can no longer be housed at the facility while recovery efforts are ongoing.
Â
The shelter had about 100 people show up throughout the day on Friday to help clean debris left at the site.
Â
APL Executive Director Deana Corbin described what the goal was for the event.
Â
"We're trying to get our supplies organized in our sheds, all the things we can get out of the buildings to salvage," Corbin said. "Just trying to make sure we know what we have and organizing and labeling it and just trying to get everything in a place where we can find it."
Â
Neighboring business, Turasky Meats, postponed its drive-thru cookout event set to raise money for APL to Monday.
