SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) - Illinois State Treasurer Michael Frerichs hosted a celebration on Wednesday, recognizing local leaders in our community during Black History Month.

The event was an opportunity to reflect on the great achievements of citizens and present awards to local trailblazers.

Multiple award recipients were from central Illinois, including Dr. Sean Crawford from Crawford Dental Clinic and Rochelle Clark from Decatur Public Schools.

Frerichs said it's important for people to see success in many different fields.

"We have people who inspire, who make people cry, who make people laugh, and that's what celebrating Black History Month is about. It's a vibrant culture, it's a diverse culture and I think more people should know more about it," Frerichs said.

Frerichs hosted a celebration earlier this month honoring Chicago-area Black leaders.
