DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) — A new timber pavilion is debuting at the Friends Creek Conservation Area.

The Macon County Conservation District said the timber for the pavilion came from white pine trees that originally stood at Sand Creek Conservation Area.
The structure was built by hand by Friends Creek Site Superintendent Andy Murphy and Site Technician Ethan Spain.
“This project was made possible by the hard work and dedication of the entire Operations team,” said Murphy. “I couldn’t have done this project without them and Ethan. He was my right-hand man through the whole project.”
In an interview, Murphy said the design is a King Post Pavilion since the top of the main bents are shaped to look like the king chess piece. Those same bents weigh around 1,800 pounds and hold up the entire structure.
Murphy hopes the project will encourage visitors to check out the group camp site and spend time at the pavilion.
