With the money, the village will extend its multi-use pathway to more of the village, connection more people with the University of Illinois campus.
Heather Mangian, a village trustee, said, "I use it to get to campus on my bike and I know others do, too."
The Prairie Fields project is one of 66 projects throughout the state selected to receive the money from the state. There were more than 200 applications. $139.2 million will be payed out for the 66 selected.
"That number is impressive," said Avoree Gore, an IDOT engineer of local roads and streets. "It shows a real appetite for community led projects that improve the quality of life."
Savoy leaders expect the expansion to make a big impact on the community.
Mangian added, "Getting out and walking not only provides a positive health income, but it gives you a chance to get out and meet your neighbors and create a sense of community."
The project includes constructing access points including connections to student housing, senior housing, Carrie Busey Elementary School, Williams Smith Park, and Colbert Park.
