SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) - Renovation of the Old State Capitol State Historic Site is 95% complete, the Illinois Capital Development Board says.
"This incredible transformation is a big win for both Illinois tourism and the capital city economy," the board said in a Facebook post. "The blend of historical preservation, modern technology, and safety and accessibility improvements will enhance the visitor experience and ensure the preservation of the Old State Capitol for years to come!"Â
- ADA Improvements: New accessible bathrooms, wider exterior entrance gates, and compliant walkways
- Innovative Additions: A new family bathroom suite with a nursing seat and changing station, lockers for personal belongings, and a laundry area to promote the reuse of materials used for site cleaning and events.
- Reconstruction of Elevators: As part of the renovation, four elevators were completely reconstructed to improve accessibility and service throughout the building.
- Enhanced Security & Efficiency: Expanded employee card readers for secure access, more than 200 new LED light fixtures to reduce electric and maintenance costs, and an improved fire protection system.
- Tech Upgrades: New servers, electronic wiring, and improved HVAC controls with electronic thermostats
- Historic Preservation: New roof, downspouts, and waterproofing under north and south entrances and new stonework around the moat. Also, 10 windows and exterior fence restored according to historic preservation standards.
