Healthy food, groceries

URBANA, Ill. (WAND) — Representative Carol Ammons (D-Urbana) secured nearly $2.4 million in grant money to build a new grocery store in Urbana.

The funding is part of the Illinois Groceries Initiative New Stores in Food Deserts program. The program, which was voted on by Ammons last spring, will support the construction, renovation and first-year operations costs of new stores.

Her support for the program got the city of Champaign $2,399,832 for Heartstrong Grocery's construction in Northwest Urbana.

"This move spurs our economy in the right direction and this investment is absolutely critical to combating the scarce fresh food supply central Illinois towns can be quite familiar with," Ammons said.
