CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WAND) - Taking time to lift the spirits of those behind bars.Â
RIPPLE Effect, a program hosted by the Education Justice Project (EJP), will send cards with messages of support to those in Illinois prisons this holiday season.Â
The group will meet from 5:30-7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 5, at Bethel AME Church in Champaign.Â
The University of Illinois College of Education stated that these are the first holidays since the Illinois Department of Corrections opted to digitize all incoming mail and upload it to tablets distributed to those in prisons.Â
IDOC plans to file a permanent prison mail scanning rule by Dec. 3, after implementing the emergency rule in August to prevent drugs from entering its facilities.Â
Those interested can find information on how to RSVP on the EJP's website.Â
