DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) — Student poets from across Macon County were in the spotlight Saturday in Decatur.

The Decatur Area Poets hosted the second annual student poetry competition at the Decatur Public Library.

Students from seven area schools were brought in to compete, and judges selected one finalist from each school.

Organizers said the event is a way to keep poetry alive.

"Poetry is an art form, and for those of us who write it, we care about it and we want to see it continue to be something that people do," said Decatur Area Poets Director Jim Wilkerson. "I think all students need is a little encouragement."

Finalists read their poems aloud before awards were presented to the top three student poets.

All finalist poems will be published in the book "Inkwell: Volume Two."
