SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) - University of Illinois Springfield students will be going door to door "trick or treating" for canned goods to support the UIS Cares Food Pantry.

The goal is to collect 9,000 pounds of food.

A total of 11 teams consisting of 145 students have registered for the annual event from 3:30 to 5 p.m. on October 26.

Students have been assigned specific neighborhoods covering about 2,916 homes to collect nonperishable food items. The teams previously visited neighborhoods and put up door hangers explaining the project.

Collected items will be weighed, and prizes will be given to the teams that collect the most food.

The UIS Cares Food Pantry was established in 2016 to support students facing food insecurity on campus. During the spring 2025 semester, the pantry served an average of 72 students per week.
