URBANA, Ill. (WAND) - The City of Urbana is accepting applications to fill a vacant seat on the City Council following the resignation of Ward 6 Council Member Grace Wilken.
Wilken stepped down on Aug. 24, 2026. Under Illinois law, Mayor DeShawn Williams has up to 60 days from the resignation date to recommend a replacement to serve until the next general election in 2027. The Urbana City Council must vote on the appointment within 30 days of the recommendation.
“We appreciate Council Member Wilken’s service to Urbana,” Mayor Williams said in a statement. “We look forward to welcoming a new Council Member who will continue the important work of serving our community.”
The deadline to apply is 5 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 11, 2026. To qualify, applicants must be eligible to vote, have resided in Ward 6 for at least one year, have no felony convictions, and owe no delinquent taxes, fees, or fines to the city. Candidates must also be available to attend City Council meetings on Monday evenings.
Applications can be submitted electronically at go.urbanail.gov/Ward6. Paper applications are available at the City Clerk's Office and the Urbana Free Library.
